Chiropractic Specialties

The use of the title specialist is limited by law in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador to a specialist only.

Chiropractic specialties are regulated by governing bodies that oversee minimal standards. Specialty colleges in Canada, for example, require curriculum that is taught by the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College (CMCC) or another accredited chiropractic school, and the maintenance of  elevated standards which are regulated by the Canadian Federation of Chiropractic Regulatory and Educational Accrediting Boards (CFCREAB),  Canadian Chiropractic Association (CCA), the appropriate Canadian specialist College, and/or the Newfoundland Labrador Chiropractic Board (NLCB).

Specialties recognized in Canada include those in the fields of Radiology, Clinical Sciences, Orthopedics, Sports Sciences, and Occupational & Physical Rehabilitation, Dr. Burton's specialty.

The specific College which regulates Dr. Burton's specialty is located in Toronto and is called the Canadian Chiropractic Specialty College of Physical & Occupational Rehabilitation. Specialists who are members of this organization are known as 'Fellows' of the College, and receive the designation FCCPOR(C) - Fellows of the Canadian College of Occupational & Physical Rehabilitatiion, Canada. (Official Canadian specialist membership list.)

Chiropractic specialists are doctors who may limit their practice to problems involving only a special area of knowledge. For example, a family physician cares for patients with common diseases of the daily family life. Dr. Burton's speciality is on back pain with an emphasis on advanced diagnosis and evidenced-based rehabilitation treatment.

While maintaining a private practice, a specialist is also a resource for other doctors or third parties seeking help with complicated patients. Dr. Burton is recognized as a specialist with the Workplace Health Safety and Compensation Commission, and may receive requests for special examinations from insutance companies.

Through the specialist training program, a chiropractor develops a unique combination of knowledge, training and skills. With experience, a specialist is as thorough and scientific as it comes in providing expert diagnosis and safe, effective, modern treatment approaches.
