About Dr. Burton
During study at Memorial University of Newfoundland (St. John's 1980-84) and while
scuba diving wearing a heavy weight belt, Dr. Burton started experiencing severe lower
back pain. Unable to get relief with medication and other treatment over months,
with some apprehension he visited a chiropractor. After a short series of
treatments, he was better. He had become one of the millions of patients in Canada
who discover one of the most effective approaches to lower back pain. And he became
a doctor of chiropractic.
Dr. Burton has since been in practice for 19 years, graduating from the Canadian
Memorial Chiropractic College (Toronto 1985-1989). During his education he received
six awards and scholarships, including the prestigious Canadian Chiropractic Association's
(CCA) President's award (1988) given to one intern in Canada annually. Other awards were
given for academic accomplishment, clinical competency, and volunteer service inside and
outside the school. Dr. Burton's most recent peer acknowledgement was an Award of
Achievement from the Newfoundland and Labrador Chiropractic Association (NLCA) in 2003,
presented in recognition for attaining the advanced designation as a specialist (in
physical rehabilitation).
Dr. Burton is internationally trained, certified and accredited (USA and Canada).
He spent a summer at an Italian back pain Institute during his education. He
travelled thirty-four trips to locations such as Toronto, Boston and Tampa for specialist
requirements from 1995 to 2003. He has the distinction of being a Fellow of the College of
Chiropractic Rehabilitation Sciences (Canada), which is shown by displaying
FCCRS(C). As well, after fulfilling American requirements, Dr. Burton was provided a
diplomate of the American chiropractic rehabilitation board, DACRB. Dr. Burton has
passed American National Board examinations which regulates and permits practice in the
United States and many countries internationally.
Dr. Burton continues to remain on top of current research, evidenced by publishing in
it (Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics
(JMPT)) and the Journal of the Canadian Chiropractic Association (JCCA).
Publishing regularly, attending scientific symposiums, and lecturing new and advanced
topics to his peers from specialists and students, are some of the requirements required
for specialists.
Dr. Burton is an active member of the CCA, NLCA, and Newfoundland and Labrador
Chiropractic Board (NLCB). Dr. Burton is a past director of the NLCA (10 years).
Work for the CCA has included travel to Toronto as a member of a review panel given the
task to review neck pain research with the goal to develop evidence-based Guidelines for
the Treatment of Neck Pain, for chiropractors in Canada. Published; view in pdf format.
Dr. Burton continues to pursue knowledge for personal enjoyment; he completed of a
Science degree, major in Biology minor in Biochemistry in May, 2005. Dr. Burton is
currently finishing an education degree to provide skills to teach undergraduates and
peers.
